I would like a distro that will update automatically and allow me to install new commands via command line from the disk remotely. I have a habit of installing the minimal when I do a fresh install and i am always stuck having to wate till I go home to install a new command, I want to avoid that seeing how its over an hour to where my server is.
Since you're currently using Mandriva as the distro for your server, you
may feel more comfortable going to another RPM-based distro. Fedora and
CentOS are two such distros, in the same Red Hat family that Mandriva (as
Mandrake originally) came from. So the learning curve would probably be
shorter than for other distros. Automatic updates and updates via the
command line can be done using yum. Installing those distros is easy,
with a nice GUI (unlike some other distros that still use byzantine
console-based installers).
I've been using Fedora as a production server for over a year,
acting as a mail server (sendmail), web server (Apache), database
server (MySQL) and application server (Tomcat). It's been stable and
reliable, haven't had a single problem yet with that system.
