This is sadly true. Fortunately the Jack only wants a "web/mail/mysql server" Just about any
distro can handle it.

Gentoo is fine, but is best for people that like to spend lots of time tweaking things.

Red Hat is usually the default Enterprise install of Linux, and as such is supported by vendors.
Yum is nice, but not as quick, robust or feature rich as apt in my opinion.

I used to like Suse as an alternative to Red Hat, but now I don't like it for the same reason. It
has all the downsides of Red Hat with very few of the upsides.

Ubuntu is a great desktop Linux, but I'm still not sold on using it for production servers. Many
of the packages are too bleeding edge and it doesn't have as large of a package repository as
Debian.

Which leaves me with my old standby Debian. With apt, package updates are a cinch as well as new
package installation. The config files for most programs come with sane defaults and are usually
well documented. There's a large community associated with Debian so help is usually a good
googling or message board post away.
