Look for a modem with an Intel chipset.  They are cheap, most under
$15, and they have Linux drivers available.  As far as support for the
cheap, ubiquitous WinModems, you can look at
<http://www.linmodems.org> for Linux driver info on some of the
commonly-available (but inferior) hardware.

You may also be able to find a used external modem for cheap.
