Of course. Apple started making x86 machines a few years ago.

No you can't, at least not legally. Have you read the OS X license
agreement?

A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple
Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time."

You're only allowed to install the x86 version on "Apple-labeled"
computers, i.e. on an x86 machine built by Apple. That's the lock-in
I was referring to.
