My standard practice RAM minimums for Firefox and OOo:

Win98SE:  256MB (VMware, 128MB native)
XP SP2:  512MB (VMware, 384MB native)
Xubuntu:  128MB
Ubuntu:  256MB

Actual experience depends CPU and hard drive performance because of
swap.  I deal with a lot of older hardware so a less responsive system
is tolerable.  In practice, Win98SE is faster than Xubuntu with
multimedia but the fundamental weaknesses of the Windows architecture
means practically no security and any driver problem will lock the
system.
