Yes, you will need to edit the xorg.conf file. If you plug the
resolution you are seeking into Google and include xorg.conf in the search
terms, there is likely a high chance of obtaining the actual mode settings
you will need for it to properly display.
I used to have to do that everytime I setup a new distro, updated
X11/xorg on my laptop, which is a wide-screen model, until just about a few
years back. None of the vendors provided the ability to detect, nor even
properly configure wide-screen screens until back then.
