 Turns out this is a known bug with Thunderbird; it sometimes 'forgets about'
its default profile. To prevent this, rename the profile something besides
'default'.

 I never did manage to get the old profile properly restored. What I *did*
manage to do was import all her old mail into a new profile, following this
page:
