Hi Everyone,
While looking at the MIFI router from Verizon, I ran across Joiku
<http://www.joiku.com/index.php>. a Finish company that develops
software that runs on existing handsets and does all sorts of things. It
became clear to me then gib is talking about a different wifi on the
Blackberry. Something like T-Mobile's service here
<http://www.theonlyphoneyouneed.com/>. It also became very clear that
things have changed very much in this area since I last looked at it
about one year ago. Some of the other interesting things I ran across
are below:
<http://www.stompboxnetworks.com/>
<http://www.wmwifirouter.com/>
I should qualify that and say the inexpensive options, one of the more
expensive is below:
<http://www.sonicwall.com/us/>
<http://www.proxicast.com/index.htm>
What's most interesting to me about Joiku is that I can use an existing
device I allready have. I also found out that many data plans are coming
down in price, depending on the carrier. There are also more options, or
tiers of plans depending on the carrier. I do have a Verizon broadband
card built into my notebook, but that limits my use of the connection. I
would rather be able to use my connection with multiple devices, w/o
having to power up the notebook. It seems that Verizon wants to be the
highest price carrier around, which is why I never activated my
broadband card. While it would be cool to be able to handle more than
one connection at once; a la Cradlepoint, MIFI, etc; the fact is I only
need one connection. That also give me a measure of physical security,
one connection and one client and I can physically turn the connection
off. Yes, I'm one of those that has Bluetooth turned off by default. I
turn it on as I need it, or it's set to be invisible and not allow
connections not previously stored. So, to get back to the topic, it
looks like I'll be buying an unlocked 3G handset and going with a new
provider. Money up front = more freedom from contracts and exorbitant
fee's. Please feel free to comment, especially if you think I have my
head up my ***. For once I'd like to have something come out sort of
like I planned!
And something completely unrelated, but funny every time I see it:
