Yes.  They improve readability.
Otherwise, the newspaper and book industries would have abandoned
serif typefaces long ago, as serif type bodies are much more prone
to damage, wear, and breakage than sans-serif typefaces.

True. Yes, I've noticed that since I switched to a flat screen,
green text on black isn't as... satisfing ... as on my 21-inch
tube monitor (which I recently gave to a friend to replace his
puny 15" when I gave him my old motherboard).
