I did get my DNA tested, and it's even less than what you quote, at least
for "genealogy only". I think between Ancestry and MyHeritage, my wife and
I got two two-for-one deals for less than $100 total.
The ethnicity estimates were "interesting", not sure how much I believe
them. By suggested match I started communicating with some likely second
cousins, but nothing leading to growth of my own proven tree yet.
My mother had better luck. She found my grandmother's half-sister we never
new about, and had a good visit with her, and got strong evidence that a
certain man was in fact my grandmother's biological father.
My grad-school advisor did research related to DNA sequencing, so I
understand that it has limitations and could be misused. But the same it
true of a lot of technology, and there are in fact laws that provide some
privacy protection.
