Yes, one thing I like to do when setting up a firewall
is to run nmap to find all the open ports.  Then for
each of the ports I decide whether to stop the service,
allow the service, or keep the service running and
block access to it from the network.

An example of the last option would be a service
like mysqld, which I may need to run, but no
access should be granted over the network.
