I found some workaround at

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/csglyi/ubuntu_1904_unable_to_open_x_config_file/?rdt=33326

which basically states:

I still get an error when I try to save it to my home folder:

ERROR: Unable to open X config file '/home/__my_home_folder_/xorg.conf' for writing.

However, I was able to write the settings to a file by clicking on
the|Show preview...|button and then saving that to a file.
