Ah! I've always used ext4.
Do you have a machine capable of hosting VMs? I'd like to see whether
you can get this to repeat itself in a Qemu VM guest. If so, I bet we
could send a gzip of that VM to the guys at Void. Also, perhaps enough
experimentation could be done effortlessly on the VM to figure out what
causes the symptom you describe.
