Then what is the purpose of the kernel configuration option?

CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION:
Say Y here if you would like to use hard disks under Linux which
were partitioned using EFI GPT.

But if I say "Y" to the option, the kernel will not boot from an
MBR partitioned drive. This behavior would indicate that the kernel
cannot read or access the MBR drive.

Because I am using the Gentoo distribution which, since the fiasco
surrounding systemd, is the only distribution that still supports
openness, choice, and freedom.

I am sorry to say, but all Linux distributions except Gentoo have
now become vassals to RedHat.
