That's not the issue here.  At this time I am not interested in booting.
I only want to be able to read/write/format GPT disks from my current
Linux system which resides on an MBR disk.

Can this be done?

It seems that it cannot as a kernel compiled with CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION=y
cannot access MBR formatted disks.
