[mdlug] UEFI and other modern problems

After all that UEFI stuff, I ran into a new problem last night. Windows 8.1 will check and see if its boot manager is selected. If not, it will "helpfully" "fix" the boot process. I did some Windows work for my parents (my mom really wants this greeting card program that doesn't play nice in Wine). I go to reboot into Linux, and... no grub. Just Windows.

After some Googling, I found the page http://askubuntu.com/questions/235567/windows-8-removes-grub-as-default-boot-manager, and tried the command it suggests, in Windows with a CMD shell running as Administrator:

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi

This only partially worked. I got a "Secure Boot" error at that point.

I found the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRQYmtysFkg, and used the command it lists:

bcdedit /set {current} recoveryenabled No

...to disable Windows 8 "fixing" the boot manager. Then I disabled Secure Boot in the BIOS. After that, I could boot into Linux or Windows and Windows doesn't seem to muck things up.
