The best $15 I ever spent on any computer part, ever, was the USB-to-IDE/SATA converter I picked up a few years ago. It's paid for itself in saved aggravation many times over since then. Something like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=usb+to+ide/sata&tbm=shop

Comes with a little power block that plugs into the wall, and voila, you can hook up a bare drive to any computer as if it were a flash drive. Ideal for moving data from old to new computers. I've also used it to temporarily hook up a DVD drive to a netbook...
