It was carried to completion, but only a single pass of zeros.

And, yes, we have restored from backup.  Missing a few hours of data
hurts, but isn't that bad.  If it's easy enough to recover the data
from the drive, it would be nice to get those few hours.  But judging
from the discussion here and from what I have read on the intertubes,
the value isn't worth the investment of resources.
