I have used this module:

I use the same chip set in my commercial product. (TheUltraSignal.com)

I did write a Linux USB interface at one time, but did not do much with it.
My users are on Windows and I have to make sales. I might port my software
it to Linux someday.

I've never used one but I know they come in both mechanical and solid-state
types.  You could get a generic I/O module that can drive a relay.
