an external RS-232 connected modem is "always" a real hardware modem.  

one connected via USB wouldn't have to be, though.  so you COULD end up with the worst of both worlds.

If your T22 has a dual-height PCMCIA slot, get a xircom realport card.

Hmm, I guess I don't know for sure that the xircom is a real hardware modem and not a winmodem.  Check that out before you buy.  The nice part of the xircoms is the realport jack, no dongle required.
