Yes I am logging in as the same user and lsmod shows the module loaded. I did install wicd to see if that made a difference, it did not. The wireless device is not even visible in lxde.

Although it shouldn't matter, Your logging in as the same user?
lsmod shows the driver is still loaded?
I've never used LXDE, what program is it using for wifi?
I've had good luck with wicd in the past
