Well that was a molehill rather than a mountain. On first boot, I went
into the BIOS setting in order to set the (IDE) CD-ROM as a boot device.
And while cruising through the settings, under "Integrated
Peripherals", guess what? There was an entry for the mobo SCSI
controller, and it was set to "Off." Switched in "On," rebooted, and
the whole shebang worked -- XP booted perfectly. So it looks like, for
whatever reason, a BIOS reset shuts off the SCSI controller on this
model of workstation.
I do appreciate all the responses, though. I honestly thought this was
going to be a bigger deal.
