[mdlug] Out of memory leading to problems booting?

I came in today and found my Linux box wedged. I rebooted it, and it
went into kernel panic, not finding init.

I used a CD to reinstall grub, and was able to boot in. The kernel log
showed the 'out of memory' killer going into action over the weekend.
Not sure what did that yet, but... how would that make booting up fail?
