Hi all ..
With my time off I have been playing around with some apps that allow
you to have a cloud type systems that you control. The key requirements
are docs, file storage, E-mail and group information exchange. I am
doing this because so many people are so enamored with having there
information web accessible, they at times seem to forget the down side.
That is you no longer have controls over what is done with it and who
can see it. What happens if the company you use closes its doors, your
data is out of your control or if a three letter government group
desired your information? Will you even know about it?
So far here is a few programs I have found that are easy to install and
seem to be powerful enough to run in a home or business. Most of them I
had running in under 30 min's and they are all open source.
The two key ones are. Yes there are others but theses were the quickest
and easiest to install.
FengOffice Community - www.fengoffice.com - used to be called OpenGoo
It has Notes, Email, Calendaring, Contact lists, Documents, Tasks, Time
management and Reporting tools. You can set up shared work-spaces as
needed. I did not test the email section but the rest seems to function
quite nicely. The screen layout has the look of exchange, good bad that
is up to you.
OwnCloud - www.owncloud.org
File storage centrally, encrypted, on hardware controlled by you, with
automatic backup & versioning. Uses web interface or webdev to access
the files. You can backup the OwnCloud files to another drive or server.
It needs to be noted you need to have LAMP installed and working before
hand but other then that to get the basic system working that was it.
Not sure how they run on a cluster so if anyone is willing to set one up
or lend me the hardware and bandwidth I will give it a try.
More to follow if group is intrested.
