After waiting impatiently for 7 months, I'm happy to announce
that Centos 6.0 is now available. At last I'll be able to
run some newer versions of software on Centos.
My first impression was that it seemed too simple. I have
DHCP set up at home, and when I ran the text installer it
just asked me to pick a harddrive and a root password. It
then proceeded with a minimal installation. Of course I
didn't mind because I know how to set hostnames and timezones,
and I'm comfortable with the command line to install more
packages. I'm just thinking this could throw off someone
not familiar with Red Hat/Centos.
Notice that it only uses the text installer if the system
is low (under 256 MB?) on memory. If you have more memory
it will use the graphical installer and you get all the
usual setup options.
I definitely want to play with it for a week or two before
using it in production. I trust that it is stable, but I
do want to find out what else has changed.
