[mdlug] Debian 6 DNS not resolving

I recently move a Fedora PC to Debian 6, using static IP, and I also added a new
computer which I installed Debian 6 with DHCP. The main issue with the install
on both PC's is DNS will resolves for ping, but not traceroute, apt-get or
wget. I don't have X on either PC yet so I have not tested a web browser. If I
put the IP address in the hosts file, apt-get works.

I have multiple computers and network devices (i.e. TiVo) on my network,
including the one used to send this email. They all are able to resolve DNS
names so I don't think it is in the physical network setup.

I also tried a Debian 6 Live and a Knoppix 6.2. For both of these distributions,
DNS does not resolve.

I have not found anything on the Internet that has made any difference. A number
of site say to remove IPv6, which I have done but it did not make any
difference.

Why would ping resolve DNS, but nothing else?

Thanks,
Stan
