It depends on the email client you are using.  For example
SquirrelMail has a plugin for quotas that can give plenty of
warning, depending on the soft and hard limits.  On one system
I set the soft limit (nag level) to 1/3 of the hard limit
(game over).

If your email client doesn't support quotas, it wouldn't be
very difficult to create a cronjob that checks for disk usage
and sends email to people before they hit their hard limits.
