[mdlug] Unencrypted remote X on OpenSuse 11.2?

Now that the laptop is working (and the battery spontaneously works
again, interestingly; maybe 'cause I'm not explicitly turning ACPI off?)
I've been using it a little. I'd like to remotely display some X apps
from my desktop in the basement, over wifi, to the laptop. I know I can
"ssh -X yadda yadda", and that works... but it's a bit slow and laggy.
Instead, I experimented with the old "xhost +<hostname>" and setting
the DISPLAY variable... but I get "Can't open display" errors, even
though things are definitely set up correctly. After some Googling, I
tried setting the X server option "DisallowTCP" to "false", and
rebooting... but no dice. I saw references in my Googles that recent X
servers have removed the ability to listen via TCP at the source level?
Is it really just *not possible* anymore to do straightforward remote X?
Sincerely,
Ray Ingles (313) 227-2317
