I think Tony is referring to running "ssh -X <server>" so that ssh
will route X traffic you start from the server back to your local
machine.  This is a great trick for one off programs but I'd stick
with VNC for a full desktop since with a generic ssh X tunnel you
won't get the compression and optimizations that you'd get with VNC.
