First question is what is your strategy for bare metal restore? Check out
redobackup it allows for bare-metal restore, even clonezilla can be a
option. Yes I know you can reinstall the OS then install a backup software
but, pop the restore CD (or cloned spare HDD) in take a book 10min break
then your back to a clean machine with your data backup software installed
and scripts configured for restore. For the data restore I have good luck
with rsync and Amanda from a external HDD. I try to do back up the HDD in
three (three places) with one of the places off site. I think HDD being
faster then tape is a better way to go.
