Seems like back up solutions may be a good topic for a future presentation.

I implemented Amanda and have a dedicated drive that is configured with 50
virtual tapes. I arbitrarily choose 50 vtapes, not knowing exactly how much
space was going to be needed for a full cycle of backups (I probably could
have done a reasonably close calculation). After running for about a year,
the overall disk space utilitization averages 15%. So I could easily bump
up the number of vtapes to 200 without much worry. But it don't seem to get
any requests to restore files past 30 days, so I figure might as well leave
it at 50. And I have to say, dealing with vtapes is a LOT easier than real
tapes. But a bit more difficult to take off site. :-) Hmmm... maybe I
should incorporate some removable media to synchronize with the latest full
backup on a weekly basis that could be taken off site. We have a fairly
slow Internet pipe, so using an Internet based backup solution probably
won't work.
