How old is the DVD-RW drive and how old are the cables?

Is the DVD-RW IDE or SATA? If IDE, does it share it's channel with any
outer devices?

Will K3b write the files to an ISO for you with out problems?

Can such an ISO then be written to a DVD?

These last two might give you a (less than satisfactory) work around as
well as help you track down the source of the trouble.
