Is there a difference between running popping the 5.3 CD in the drive and choosing "Upgrade System" and simply running yum update on a system running 5.2? If not, I do this all the time (yum update and /etc/redhat-release display the current version).

Yes, I start upgrading after it's been out for a week
or two, starting with less important hosts to make sure
nothing breaks on the important ones.

Absolutely. I do it all the time. And I recommend
doing it soon before 5.4 is out. There's been a few
times that I've had issues upgrading more than one
minor release at a time.
