Thanks Michael, I'll keep Drive Snapshot in mind but two of my technological dependents are on a fixed income so dropping $57 (39 EU) would make a painful enough dent in their monthly budget that they'd probably forgo the purchase.

It seems to me that, given the stupid limitations of Microsoft's Backup program, the size of the Microsoft market and the need someone in the open source community would've put together a backup package appropriate to the needs of the average, non-technical Windows user.

Although NOT free, I found an excellent solution in "Drive Snapshot."
I first encountered it on a "Bart PE" disc.  It's AMAZINGLY fast
(about 4x the speed of PartImage under Linux), very flexible (it can
backup from within a running Windows session), and can do a
verify-after-backup.  It has a 30-day free trial:
