I have always set up Samba, NFS and/or iSCSI on a
server and configured it myself. Recently a friend
asked for help deciding between FreeNAS and OpenFiler
for use at work.

Looking at the specs, OpenFiler looked better than
FreeNAS, so I focused on OpenFiler. It had a lot of
nice features he would never need. The sticker was
that they charged for the documentation. This didn't
give me warm fuzzies about product support. I asked
my friend what he really needed, and he said something
easy to set up and administer.

We installed CentOS and configured Samba is less than
half an hour. He saw that it could do everything he
needed, and he already knows how to maintain CentOS.

So, my question to you...is there anything on OpenFiler
or FreeNAS that you need that you can't do with Samba,
NFS or iSCSI?
