Here's more info on installing Linux on a PS3:

First, a dual-boot configuration must be created:

Likely, all the stuff you have stored on the PS3 will be gone.

Second, install a Linux distribution that uses all the SPU's:
http://www.ps3cluster.umassd.edu/step1setup.html

This installation also enables the optional creation of PS3 clusters 
- just in case you want your own supercomputer...
