There are also websites that you will generate a zipfile for you containing the .vmx (vm configuration) and the .vmdk (virtual disk) to use in VM Player.

Bochs has a tool bundled with it to create blank disk files that supports
VMWare disk files and there are tools and informational websites online to
help create a VMX file which can also be edited by hand, and the VMware
Tools iso can be downloaded for free.

If you don't mind mucking with text files you won't need to purchase
VMWare workstation and you can get by with VMPlayer only.
