1. Desktop drives don't fit in your pocket...even WITHOUT a carrier
2. Desktop drives require an external 12V power supply, which is
another bulky item, and it requires a free 120V AC plug, completely
killing the convenience aspect of a USB drive.

They are of extremely limited functionality.

My original laptop setup before mobilizing for Iraq had an
external desktop drive.  That quickly proved to be unworkable --
so much so that I ended up buying a new laptop with dual hard drives.
