DUTIES:
Works as a member of the ITCS Web/Database Team to provide the infrastructure
for web-based services and for the primary web presence for the University of
Michigan.
Under the direction of and working closely with the Senior Database Administrator:
* Performs database administration: Installs, configures, tunes, patches,
upgrades, maintains, and supports multiple mission critical database instances
(currently MySQL and Oracle); configures, monitors, maintains, and
troubleshoots database replication; performs database backups and restores;
implements and tests disaster recovery procedures; and identifies and removes
performance bottlenecks.
* Performs system administration: Installs, manages, troubleshoots, repairs,
and upgrades server hardware; installs, configures, tunes, patches, maintains,
and supports server operating systems (currently, Linux); and identifies and
removes performance bottlenecks.
* Responds to support requests from IT staff from other campus units, partner
institutions, and vendors, including: creates/modifies/deletes database
instances; manages database accounts; resets database passwords; explains how
to perform common tasks; and investigates and troubleshoots reported problems.
* Writes and maintains scripts to automate tasks, to integrate systems, and to
perform monitoring. Perl and Bourne Shell are currently the preferred
scripting languages.
* Writes and revises documentation: Documents database setup and
configuration. Documents various database administration tasks and procedures
for on-call staff and other team members.
Note: This position requires occasional time outside of normal working hours
to perform scheduled maintenance.
Note: This position does not currently require participation in the
Web/Database Team on-call rotation, but may require it in the future.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or an equivalent
combination of education and experience.
Knowledge and ability to perform basic SQL related tasks.
Knowledge and ability to perform Unix system administration (Linux preferred)
tasks.
Demonstrated ability to learn new skills on the job.
Ability to be flexible and constantly adapt to a very dynamic environment with
continuously changing technologies and requirements.
Ability to concurrently handle multiple projects and priorities.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Strong oral and written communications skills.
Note: This position requires that the staff person provide and maintain their
own residential Internet connectivity and mobile voice (cell phone) service.
The ability to safely lift 45 pounds and maneuver servers into and out of
racks is also required.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with administering enterprise-class databases (MySQL, Oracle, or
Postgresql preferred).
Experience with writing and maintaining scripts (Perl, PHP, or Bourne Shell
preferred).
Knowledge and experience in database programming.
Familiarity with the University of Michigan computing environment.
