Once you get used to it, it's IMMENSELY better.

Character by character has a real-time flavor to it, and people
spend FAR less time going back and correcting typos.  There are
no "dead air" pauses while the other person is typing a long
long long message before hitting enter, and most importantly,
with line-by-line, conversations often start to diverge into
two parallel conversations being held simultaneously, which soon
leads to massive confusion.

Having used both extensively, the advantages of line-by-line
are far outweighed by the disadvantages.

Im just talking about the text itself.  Nothing else.
