[mdlug] linux hardware - Microcenter

Computer Direct, a local Michigan Company, would have matched or likely
already beat the prices at Microcenter.

Computer Direct also builds, promotes and sells Linux running PCs, which
Microcenter doesn't.

They are on John R between Firestone and Wendy's, just south of 14 Mile
Road.

(I used to work Saturdays for Computer Direct, I don't anymore.)

I just purchased some components.

This is my plan: got to Microcenter.com and buy this stuff:

Item SKU Item Description Quantity Per Item Price
Total Price
180802 ASUS M2N68-AM SE2 MICRO-ATX AM 1 49.99 49.99
279000 KINGSTON KING 1GB DDR2 667 . 1 24.99 24.99
 Subtotal >
	74.98
Shipping > 6.98
Tax > 4.50

 Order Total > $86.46

I'd then add a CPU, case . . .
AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition SKU 266825 $195.99

1 Tera byte hard drive many available about $90.

Gigabyte GZ-X6BPD ATX case SKU 093773 $49.99

Eagle Technologies Voltas 500 Watt ATX 12V Power Supply SKU 160739 $34.99

All are in stock (as of a few days ago). The CPU is in-store only.

They can assemble and test for a fee.

I've been asked by a friend who is running a small business to help him
purchase and setup a linux server. I'm kind of known as a linux evangelist,
so it makes sense why he asked me, but I don't know much about purchasing
server hardware, and frankly I haven't built a computer from the ground up
in a good 6-7 years.

So, I thought I would drop a quick message to see if someone could give me
any advice. I'm not asking for you to do the research for me, but a gentle
nudge in a good direction would be appreciated.

My friend wasn't specific about the server capabilities he needs. He has a
growing technology business and wants to be as agile as possible. Sounds
like it could be used as a web server, subversion repo, and used for
virtualization among other things. I'm not really looking to build from
scratch, so any advice on where to go, or tips when buying a system would be
most welcome.

The budget is $500 +/- $100.

Again, I would appreciate any insight you might have. Thank you in advance.

Ryan
