I have had problems with Lexmark and Canon.  And I have found that HP works on a mixed env. well.  With the help of SAMBA and YAST Gui.  

From Samba I can attatch to at shared printer from a windows pc. YAST Gui I have setup printers that were networked.  I would recomend HP or Xerox printers because if the driver is not on the list there is a family driver that will work well to print.  It is just a paper waight if it is not of any use.

Or, more generally from a web browser with:
http://localhost:631/

or from another machine:
http://host.name.here:631/

Try to avoid giving solutions which require unrelated
software (such as a particular desktop GUI).
