I bought a Samsung ML1710 black and white laser printer in 2003 for
around $109 after rebate at Best Buy.
Got the ink cartridge refilled in early '06 for $50 at Cartridge
World (?), printed up several hundred pages over
the last couple of years and expect to be able to print up hundreds
more. All modern versions of Linux now
support it out-of-the-box.

Before that it was el cheapo inkjets that all had their ink dry up,
expensive cartridge replacement or else
refill kits that got ink all over the place but never got the printer
back to proper working order.
