I have a Linksys WRT54GS (about 2 years old) and I had the same problem.
I updated the firmware with DD-WRT and it fixed the problem. DD-WRT
supports many Makes and Models, you should look up your router.

I think it has to do with the amount of connections that the router has
to deal with and the default firmware can't handle it.
