I don't know what I'd do without them. They are pretty simple to manage through the command line, but I believe there are gui tools that will do the job as well ( Webmin has modules available I think). My systems are setup to authenticate against Active Directory using winbind. From there I can grant what ever access is needed to the smb shares, and other resources in general, that's needed.

Subject: [mdlug] ACLs difficult to administer?
Hello, say the usual format of ugo (user, group, other) isn't sufficient in a certain situation. You need multiple groups with multiple sets of different permissions. You can do it with ACLs. Are ACLs hard to manage? Is NTFS any better? Why might someone say so? What is the tie-in with samba? If someone says ntfs is easier, are they just being lazy? Thanks, Dean
