 I created a file, ".Xresources" in my home dir, with the following contents:

XTerm*metaSendsEscape: on
XTerm*VT100.font: 9x15

 And I have my startup scripts set to run "xrdb ~/.Xresources". Some variation
on this should do for you, too.
