I tried doing a chkdsk (Windows fsck) on all the Windows partitions, then
doing a repair install. No dice, the machine spontaneously reboots. So, I
let it get into Linux, and burned a couple of DVDs.

Well, I *tried* to. The burn process aborted about halfway in. Tried again,
same result, and dmesg showed "DriveReady SeekComplete" errors. "Oh, man," I
think, "is my DVD burner dying?"

I power-cycle the machine, and burn two DVDs just fine. So far as I can tell,
the bad Windows boot did something to confuse the DVD burner. I could read
DVDs just fine, but I couldn't burn them. Maybe when Windows crashed, it sent
garbage commands out?

Anyway, I'd never seen Windows sabotage hardware like that before.

 Sincerely,

 Ray Ingles (313) 227-2317
