This is often far easier said than done.
My boss was talking to me last week about how he is going to get a
new laptop. He wants to pickup an Apple laptop, because it looks cool with
its aircraft aluminum case and all the rest. Plus, it runs Microsoft Office.
You know what the problem is? By having a commercial that states
that it runs Microsoft Office, he is now under the impression that it will
run all of the Windows Only proprietary crap that he needs to be able to do
his job. I spent some time explaining that it is a MacOSX version of
Microsoft Office and that MacOSX and Windows don't speak the same language
and that applications, even if they are the "same" for both platforms need
to be packaged in the language specific for that Operating System.
Obviously, there are Virtual Machines that he can run Windows within
MacOSX and then kind of sort of run the applications he needs, except that
he will lose out on 3D Graphics, which would really kill his performance in
the CAD App that he must use in his work.
Anyway... I think it would be really, really nice if all the OS
vendors got together and decided to really serve the public by standardizing
some sort of OSAL (Operating System Abstraction Layer) that would work
better than Java and just allow people to run whatever on top of whatever,
whenever they want.
