There's another possibility. I just picked up a little gadget off eBay,
though you can get them in stores. It's a USB cable with a block on one
end. That block has plugs for IDE, notebook IDE, and SATA. It came with
a little power supply that can power a hard drive. It works, and turns
any IDE/SATA device into a USB one. No enclosure, but I've plugged 'naked'
drives into my laptop and my PS3, and they work. For only $15, it was
worth it, given the number of drives sitting around my house.
It's not aesthetically pleasing, but you can hook up whatever drive
you want at that point...
