Which isn't surprising.  Sun was founded by Bill Joy --
and one of his long term goals when he started the BSD
project was to have a free-to-share programming platform
By the time 4.3 BSD was released, over 80% of the
original Bell Labs source code in the kernel had been
replaced by "clean-room" implementation source code.

[Programmers were deliberately isolated from Bell Labs
source code, given only the function names of kernel
calls, and specs for what behavior is expected, and
then told to duplicate each kernel function.  This
appears to be part of the deal for the DARPA funding].
